While only going 9-19 last season, the Compton College men's basketball team seemed to find a breakthrough late in the campaign when the team won three of its last five games, defeating South Coast Conference South Division foes Long Beach City and LA Harbor while playing it close in a 3-point loss to league champion Cerritos.

Under third-year head coach Keith Hollimon and his staff, The 2024-25 Compton squad built on those final '23-24 performances and have put together a successful 8-6 start to this season as it looks to compete for the SCC South title.

The squad has the second-best, non-conference record of the division's six teams only a half-game behind Cerritos at 9-6.

Compton has an 89-71 victory v. state #28-ranked Moorpark and played well in losses to #7 Sequoias (81-79) and against #30 West Los Angeles (83-80). The cagers have also battled in defeats to #11 East Los Angeles and #15 San Bernardino Valley. Compton is 4-3 in games decided by six points.

A consistent offense is averaging 80.1 points per contest, good for 17th in the state, and 13th in shooting accuracy in California at 47.1 percent from the field.

Sophomore guard Zoe Holman (from Camden, N.J.) leads the team with a 14.5 points average with a 3.1 steals clip, and he is followed by letterman guard Jordan English, averaging 12.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. English poured in 27 points in a win over Grossmont.

Other key contributors are freshman guards Elijah Evans (10.3 points) and Rey Daniels (8.3 points, from Miami, Fla.).

A player starting to emerge is 6-foot-8 freshman forward Kentrell Freeman, averaging 6.7 points and 5.5 rebounds. From New Orleans, La., Freeman scored a season-high 14 points, making 7-for-8 from the floor in the team's 85-79 loss to a strong Pasadena City program. In that home game on Jan. 3, the team shot a sizzling 60.4 percent from the floor overall and led 52-38 at halftime before the Lancers rallied in the second half.

Second-year guard Erik Garcia is another regular part of the Compton rotation, averaging 4.3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.

Compton's next home game will be Wednesday, Jan. 15 v. LA Trade-Tech. The team won't begin the 10-game, SCC South schedule until Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Cerritos. All games are 7 p.m. tip-offs.
