Compton College and the South Coast Conference Decide to Opt-Out of Spring I Sports

Compton, Calif. – Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic several months ago, Compton College has prioritized the health and safety of students and employees in plans for reopening campus and returning to athletic competition.

In accordance with public health guidance and safety standards, Compton College has decided to opt out of Spring I sport seasons for the 2020-21 academic year. The following sports are included: football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's basketball. An online Student-Athlete Forum was hosted by Compton College President/CEO, Dr. Keith Curry, on December 8, 2020 for student-athletes to discuss the status of athletics and present their comments and concerns.

Additionally, the presidents of the 12 South Coast Conference (SCC) colleges unanimously made the decision to opt out of Spring I sport seasons. The SCC consists of the following colleges: Cerritos, Compton, East Los Angeles, El Camino, Los Angeles City, LA Harbor, LA Southwest, LA Trade-Tech, Long Beach City College, Mt. San Antonio, Pasadena City, and Rio Hondo. The SCC announcement can be found here.

"It is a difficult and unprecedented time to be a student-athlete and unfortunately due to the health and safety concerns of all involved, this decision was made," said Andree Pacheco, director of student development and athletics. "Although it is not what we hoped for, we should take this as an opportunity to further assist our student-athletes improve academically so when they do finally compete in intercollegiate athletics, they are in a better position to receive opportunities and accomplish their goals at the next level because they are academically strong. Furthermore, when Compton College receives approval from the the Los Angeles Country Department of Public Health to re-open the campus, we plan to implement social distancing practices, skill combines for student-athletes to display their abilities, and an intramurals program."

The decision on Spring II sport seasons will be determined later, as the college has until February 26, 2021 to decide. Those sports include baseball, softball, badminton, and men's and women's track and field.

Compton College and the Athletics Department staff remain committed to exploring meaningful competitive experiences that can take place at Compton College when it is safe to do so. As the pandemic evolves, Compton College will continue to monitor changing federal, state, and local guidance, and will continue to consult with each other as well as public health authorities. The health and well-being of all constituents involved has been, and will continue to be, the driving force behind decisions made during this challenging time.
