
The Pasadena City College women's badminton team improved to 4-0 at the top of the South Coast Conference standings behind a 20-1 win over Compton at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium on Wednesday.
The Lancers are 4-1 overall with other conference wins over El Camino (19-2), East Los Angeles (21-0), and San Diego City (19-2). The team's lone loss was in non-conference at De Anza, 17-4.
Janet Diec, playing #1, #3 Christel Joy Villa, #4 Jhaira Guevarra, #5 Lexi Xing, and #6 Yuki Ding all won two singles matches. Karylle Peralta split her matches at #2 with Compton's lone point from #1 player Yoon Noe.
Diec outplayed Noe, 21-12, 21-13 and defeated Compton's #2 Michelle Oo, 21-8, 21-8.
Villa paired with PCC's top player Anh Tran in #1 doubles as the duo won over Noe-Oo, 21-11, 21-6, and defeated Compton's #2, Kim Cruz and Amanda Jackson, 21-6, 21-3. At Lancers #2 doubles, Beatris Tzou and Yolanda Huang beat Noe-Oo, 22-20, 21-16, and took the other match, 21-2, 21-8.
Ding and Leigh San Gabriel scored a win in #3 doubles, 21-14, 21-10 over Cynthia Jimenez and Elva Lopez.
"Janet stepped up and played very well as did Christel, who got solid experience in playing v. Compton's #1 doubles squad," said PCC head coach Jen Ho. "We are getting better but we will be tested on Friday."
Ho referred to the team's big matchup v. San Diego Mesa on March 21 at PCC as the Olympians are also 4-0 in SCC play (4-1 overall, lost to De Anza).
In the team's blanking of ELAC, Tran downed the Huskies' #1 Stephanie Fuentes, 21-11, 21-18 and dominated v. #2 Melissa Flores, 21-5, 21-6. Diec, Tzou, Peralta, Villa, and Huang also won a pair of singles contests while Tran-Diec, Tzou-Peralta collected two doubles wins each. Guevarra-Xing won in the lone #3 doubles.
