West LA goes 3-0 to capture Wild West Shootout championship

CULVER CITY – No. 17 state-ranked West Los Angeles College dominated its competition by going 3-0 over the weekend to win its home tournament, the Wild West Shootout.

Led by a trio of double-doubles, the Wildcats cruised to an 83-69 win over Orange Coast College in Saturday's championship final. Blake Lander scored a team-high 22 points to go along with 14 rebounds, Marland Harris totaled 19 points and 17 boards, while CJ Hardy posted 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Isaiah Daniel also had a big game off the bench, contributing 17 points.

West LA controlled the boards, outrebounding OCC by a 61-33 margin. The defense also held the Pirates to 37 percent shooting (26-71) for the game.

On Friday, Hardy went off for 30 points and 7 assists to lead West LA to an 86-78 win over Compton College in the semifinals. Lander had 15 points and Daniel added 12 points.

The Wildcats opened the tourney with a big 109-73 victory over Barstow Community College on Thursday night. Lander scored a game-high 25 points, Hardy had 14 points and 8 assists, and Daniel poured in 14 points.

Also for the Wildcats, Chidubem Akametu had 13 points and 5 boards and Harris came up short of a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Hardy was named the tournament MVP after averaging 20.1 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.2 rebounds over the weekend. Harris, Daniels, and Lander were also named to the all-tournament team.

West LA improved to 6-1 overall. The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday (Dec. 7) when they open the three-day Fullerton Crossover tournament with a 5 p.m. game against Southwestern College.
