Anahi Rodriguez scored two goals as the Compton College women's soccer team started the 2024 season with a 2-0 triumph over visiting Imperial Valley on Tuesday.
Rodriguez, a forward, is a sophomore transfer who last played in 2019 at El Camino College. Assisting on her scores were midfielders Joana Hernandez Fierro and Paola Villafana, a freshman. Hernandez Fierro returns to the field also a sophomore transfer after she last saw action all the way back in 2015 at Cerritos College.
Rodriguez led the offensive attack with four shots while both Hernandez Fierro and freshman forward Mariah Miranda added three shots each.
Freshman Leslie Chavarria excelled as Compton's goalie with six saves for the shutout.
Compton is excited about the return of its two All-South Coast Conference First Team performers from last season in center back defender Yarely Marquez and center midfielder Joseline Rivera.
Other Compton lettermen are defenders Georgina Moreno and Emely Amado (left side back), and midfielder/wing Emmy Carrillo Bravo.
With experience in key positions, Coach Jose Garcia's squad expects to improve as the season develops. Compton hosts Glendale on Friday, Aug. 30 in a 4 p.m. contest.
Compton begins SCC play on October 8 when it hosts El Camino College.
