Compton, Calif. - Freshman Derrius Ennis scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Compton men's basketball team to its first conference victory, 90-77, over LA Harbor on Wednesday evening.
Compton improves to 4-15, 1-2, while the Seahawks suffered their first conference loss of the season and now sit at 12-9, 1-2.
Ennis and sophomore L'kielynn Taylor paced the Tartar offense with Taylor adding another double-double with 19 points and 11 boards. Sophomore Chris Townsell also recorded 18 points and seven assists, while freshman Jaylen Milliion also earned double-figures in the points column with 13.
The Tartars got off to an early nine point lead and never looked back as they built a margin as many as 22 in the second half. The team scored 18 points on its 13 offensive rebounds to Harbor's three, while shooting 57 percent from the field.
The night also marked a special tribute to former Compton men's basketball head coach James Newman, who passed away in July. A large gathering of former student-athletes, friends, and family came out to support the Tartars, while a ceremony at halftime revealed a new banner that will hang in Tartar Gymnasium. Included in the group were former Tartars who were on the state championship teams in 1970 and 1973, as well as former assistant coach Al Cherry.
The Tartars continue conference play at El Camino on Friday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
