Wild Rally Gives Baseball High-Scoring Win
Trailing 18-12, things looked bleak for the Compton College baseball team in its South Coast Conference contest at East Los Angeles on Saturday. But Compton came up with the rally of the season, scoring 10 runs in the top of the eighth innng to stun the Huskies in a slugfest, 22-20.
Compton (8-28 overall) snapped a 10-game losing streak thanks a rally that saw 10 consecutive batters reach base, started on a single by leadoff hitter Deegan Grgas and capped by Grgas' 2-RBI double. It was a perfect day at the plate for Grgas as he batted 4-for-4 with three doubles, four runs scored, and drew three walks.
Compton banged out 23 hits as Quincy Quintero batted 4-for-7, Anthony Macias went 3-for-3 and two doubles, Ian Wilson was 3-for-4 with two walks, and Corey Guy hit 3-for-7. Anthony Manuel knocked in four RBI (2-for-6) while Ezekiel Cornett (2-for-4) slugged a 3-run homer in the sixth that tied the game, 12-12, at that point.
ELAC, which had a 5-hit day from Matias Nolasco, jumped ahead, 18-12, with six runs in the sixth highlighted by a grand slam by Manny Ramirez Jr., the son of the famous former Major League Baseball slugger and 12-time All-Star.
In the ninth, Compton's eighth pitcher of the day Phillip Melgoza stranded the tying runs on second and third for the save as he got Felipe De Alba to fly out to right field for the final out.
While Compton has had a rough SCC season (5-16, eighth place in the 9-team league), it has a highlight in upsetting fourth-place Long Beach, 9-8, on March 27. In that road game, Compton came up with the tie-breaking run, 2-out RBI single by Manuel. Melgoza pitched five strong innings in relief with five strikeouts to earn the mound victory.
The game lasted 4 hours, 40 minutes.
Directed by head coach Shannon Williams, Compton plays a 3-game series v. Rio Hondo this week and a non-conference game v. Ventura on Saturday, April 26 to close out the 2025 season.
