The Tartars capped off the week by defeating the visiting Rio Hondo College by a score of 9-6 to take the series.

It was a great, sunny Saturday afternoon for the Compton College baseball team who hosted Rio Hondo College on April 22, 2023, which happened to land on the same day as Compton College Community Day. Saturday was quite busy with many visitors on campus. The campus was open to the community to help celebrate two grand opening ceremonies, as well as the Library Naming Ceremony.

The baseball game started with Compton Community College District Board of Trustee President, Ms. Barbara Jean Calhoun, throwing out the first pitch. Trustee Calhoun brought a lot of energy to the Tartar dugout, she took that energy to the mound for her first pitch and threw a perfect strike down the middle. Our special guest was also accompanied by Compton College President, Dr. Keith Curry and Board of Trustee member, Juanita Doplemore.

The Tartars wrapped up 4 baseball games last week. On Tuesday, April 18th, they beat Rio Hondo College by a score of 6-3 and on Wednesday, April 19th they played Cerritos College losing 13-9. On Thursday April 20th, the Tartars traveled to Rio Hondo College, losing a hard-fought game 10-4.  Then, the Tartars capped off the week by defeating the visiting Rio Hondo College by a score of 9-6 to take the series. In that game, the Tartars had outstanding offense, producing 16 hits as a team with individual highlights from shortstop Sevon Battle who was 3-4 and Designated hitter Brian Vichot who was 3-4 with a home run. Left-fielder Ryan Smith was 2 for 3 with a home run, 2nd baseman Crixitian Tavares was 3 for 4, 1st baseman Jacob Peach went 2-5 and right-fielder Tervell Johnson was 2-3.

The pitching staff held up their own as well. Starting pitcher Joseph Giunta pitched 6 innings earning his 4th win of the season, while reliever Alex Howard pitched 2 scoreless innings and Antonio Estrella closed out the game for his 3rd save of the season.
